The Nelson Poynter Memorial Library utilizes the Library of Congress Classification system to organize books in our collection. Most history books are found with call numbers in the classes C, D, E, and F. Some subfields of history may reside in other areas of the collection, such as social history (HN) and women's history (HQ). When unsure, please ask for assistance at the service desk or contact me.

Class C – Auxiliary Sciences of History (General)

  • Subclass CB – History of Civilization (studies of human culture, with an emphasis on early history)
  • Subclass CC – Archaeology (studying human cultures by collecting and examining material remains)
  • Subclass CD – Diplomatics, Archives, and Seals (includes many archival catalogs)
  • Subclass CE – Technical Chronology and Calendars (sources that document our measurement of time)
  • Subclass CJ – Numismatics (sources that document our use of currency and money)
  • Subclass CN – Inscriptions and Epigraphy (sources that discuss text and images used to communicate)
  • Subclass CR – Heraldry (sources that trace rank and protocol, as well as officers of arms and coats of arms)
  • Subclass CS – Genealogy (sources that document ancestors, pedigree, and family history)
  • Subclass CT – Biography (sources that describe the lives of individuals and groups of people)

Class D – World History (except American History)

  • Subclass DAW – Central Europe
  • Subclass DB – Austria, Liechtenstein, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia

  • E 141 through E 143  – Descriptive accounts from early eras until 1810
  • E 151 through  E 900s – History of the United States

Class F – Local History of the United States

  • F 1 through F 975 – United States local history, including:
    • F 206 through F 220 – History of the South and South Atlantic States
    • F 296 through F 301 – History of the Gulf States and West Florida
    • F 300 through F 320 – History of Florida
  • F 1000 through F 1145 – British America/Canada
  • F 1170 – French America

Class G – Geography, Anthropology, Recreation (Not all subclasses are included)

  • Subclass G – General Geography (area of the collection with atlases and maps)
  • Subclass GE – Environmental Sciences (studies that examine our living environment)
  • Subclass GF –  Human ecology and geography (sources that examine the people and cultures of our world)
  • Subclass GN – Anthropology
  • Subclass GR  – Folklore
  • Subclass GT  – Manners and customs (General)
  • Subclass GV – Recreation and leisure (sports history materials are generally located here)

Class H – Social Sciences (Not all subclasses are included)

  • Subclass HD – Industries, land use, and labor (studies of corporations and labor history are found here)
  • Subclass HM – Sociology (resources that document social institutions)
  • Subclass HN –  Social history and conditions (social histories, studies that examine social problems and reform)
  • Subclass HQ – The family, marriage, and women (women's history, gender studies, and GLBT histories are here)
  • Subclass HS  – Societies, including secret and benevolent
  • Subclass HT  – Communities, classes, and races (some materials on slavery and racism are in this area)
  • Subclass HX  – Socialism, Communism, and Anarchism
